After 4 long years, the Serving Vinton sign west of town is now standing tall and proud again. All three of the signs on the outskirts of town were damaged during the windstorm in 2011 but the one west on Highway 218 seemed to suffered the most damage and was totally destroyed.

These signs are an important asset to the community as they make residents and visitors aware of the groups that are here to serve our community. These groups and organizations make a big impact in our community by serving as volunteers, hosting programs and events, providing services for those in need, as well as enhancing the quality of life for many people in Vinton.

A small group of concerned citizens understood their importance and knew it was time to take action and work to get the sign replaced. The group went to work securing quotes and writing several grants. When only one of the grants was funded, hope was not lost. The group then decided to ask for the support of the community to help raise the remaining funds. I am happy to report, that as in the past, the community came through to help make it happen. It was through the generosity of the following people that helped contribute to the completion of the project: Nancy Baldwin, Farmers Savings Bank, Duane & Becky Fisher, Carol & Benny Geater, Carolyn Hibbs, Kiwanis Club, Teresa Meyer, Tharp Design, Tootsies Ice Cream & More, US Bank, John & Donna Watson and Edwon Yedlik along with the Vinton Community Foundation Grant. Your generosity does not go unnoticed and again, we thank you!

With the completion of the new sign, organizations were added to the sign as well – GoVS and Vinton Unlimited. The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter put up a new sign (replacing the old FFA sign that was much weathered and smaller in size). Limited spaces still remain for local non-profits that are serving our community. For more information on the ‘Serving Vinton Signs’, contact Duane Fisher at 319-475-2318 or [email protected]

So please, next time you are out and about, be sure to drive by any of the 3 signs and celebrate the great organizations we have in our community! SERVING VINTON!
