This column give me the opportunity to share with you anything interesting and/or important. One item that has been in our local news lately is the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School situation. Next week everyone is invited to attend a Community Idea and Input open house at the Vinton/Shellsburg High School gym. You may be asking yourself, “Why should I attend? What happens with IBSSS doesn’t affect me.” I feel that this affects all of us who live and work in this community. As a member of the Destination Vinton committee we have seen tremendous interest from tour groups coming to visit. In 2016 the IBSSS Mary Ingells Society had 960 people (representing 26 different states) tour the facility. We already have 6 bus tours booked for 2017. Small communities like ours are looking for ways to attract visitors. I would hate to lose this significant piece of history. It would be a sad day if the doors were to close on this national treasure. Anytime you have increased traffic to your town you are putting us on the map as a great place to live, work, and play! Join me in attending the Open House on April 5th from 6-9pm. Together we can make a difference that will benefit everyone.
